Ryan Djojokarso (1983) is sinds maart 2024 artistiek leider van Danstheater AYA. Met zijn muzikale en beeldende danstheater wil hij de worsteling én de lol van het echte leven naar het podium brengen. Directe en eerlijke voorstellingen waarin spannende onderwerpen niet worden geschuwd. Voorstellingen met een spannende mix van hedendaagse dansvormen, spel, zang en livemuziek uit verschillende (jongeren)culturen.
Vanuit zijn jeugd in Suriname weet Djojokarso dat kunst geen vanzelfsprekendheid is. Hij is zelf overtuigd van de grote waarde van kunst en voelt daarom de urgentie om verhalende dansvoorstellingen te maken die mensen uit alle lagen van de maatschappij aanspreken. Hij creëert een hybride vorm die culturen en verschillende genres met elkaar verbindt. Licht, persoonlijk, speels, beeldend en met humor.
Hij is een veelzijdig regisseur en choreograaf en maakt voorstellingen voor kinderen, jongeren en volwassenen. Hij was al langer verbonden aan AYA als huischoreograaf en werkte eerder bij o.a. Korzo, DOX, Scapino Ballet Rotterdam en Conny Janssen Danst. Van 2020 tot 2024 had hij zijn eigen gezelschap LIBI. Met zijn werk ontving hij verschillende prijzen en nominaties. Hij werd onder meer twee keer genomineerd voor de Jong Publiekprijs van de Nederlandse Dansdagen. En zijn voorstellingen WINTER/21/J. en HERFST werden geselecteerd voor het Nederlands Theaterfestival als een van de meest indrukwekkende voorstellingen van 2022 en 2024.

Since March 2024, Ryan Djojokarso (1983) is the new artistic director of Danstheater AYA. With his musical and visual dance theater, he wants to bring both the struggle and fun of real life to young audiences. He creates direct and honest performances with a sense of humor that speak to a wide and culturally diverse audience. Shows with an exciting mix of contemporary dance styles, acting, singing, and live music from different (youth) cultures.
From his early years in Suriname, Djojokarso knows that art is not a given. He is convinced of the great value of art and therefore feels the urgency to create narrative dance performances that appeal to people from all walks of life. He creates a hybrid form that connects cultures and different genres. Light, personal, playful, magical and with humor.
He is a versatile director and choreographer, creating performances for children, teenagers and adults. From 2021 on he was already connected to AYA as a resident choreographer and has previously worked with a.o. Scapino Ballet Rotterdam, Korzo, DOX, Conny Janssen Danst and Konzert Theater Bern. From 2020 to 2024, he led his own company, LIBI. His work has earned him various awards and nominations. He was twice nominated for the Young Audience Award of the Dutch Dance Days. His performances WINTER/21/J. and HERFST were also selected for the Dutch Theatre Festival as some of the most impressive shows of 2022 and 2024.
